Yard Size: 1/2 acre to under acre
This mower is great. I came from a John Deere 180LT rider with a 48” deck and 17HP motor. I had it for a number of years and was very happy with the performance. The only problem, I have a large hill to mow and my Deere wasn’t able to make the climb any more. I have just at an acre of land with 3/4 of it a steep hill and a number of trees. My Deere just got wore out from climbing the hill over and over.
My neighbor purchased an RZT 50, with lap bars, and loves it. His yard is similar with the hill but not as many trees to cut around. He took pity on me when he saw me trying to climb the hill and not getting anywhere and let me use his mower. I was amazed at the power and the control was good. However, with the hill I wasn’t as comfortable as I wanted to be using the lap bars. I have previous experience with zero turns and was able to knock the rest of my yard out without any issues but there is no braking with the zeros on the downhill.
So I started shopping around and reading reviews of what was out there. I was able to use a demo model Exmark from a local dealer. That mower was awful and had no control at all on the downhill. At least with my neighbor’s RZT I had some control. The Exmark was under powered and the controls were very touchy. I took the mower back with a couple of new scratches due to the lack of control and continued shopping.
I started looking at the RZTS and talking to a few current owners and sales people. I wasn’t sold at first just because of the look, to me it looks dumb. But after driving one around and making some tight turns on a steep incline I was sold.
I purchased the RZTS 54 and couldn’t be happier. The power is great and having the larger cutting deck makes the mowing time nothing. My first cutting experience was a two acre flat lot with rather tall grass. I was able to get that yard cut in just over thirty five minutes. The cruise control feature came in very handy. The next cutting experience was my yard and lets just say holy cow. My best mowing time with my old mower was an hour and twenty minutes. I got the entire yard done in just over thirty minutes with no slips or slides. The mower has so much control and stability I had no concerns about turning up or downhill. I was able to stop when I needed and turn when and where I needed. This mower is well worth the cost and if you have a hill to mow this is the mower for you.
If I could add anything to the mower it would be the ability to have armrests for the seats.
I've put off buying a zero turn mower because of the lack of control of the front wheels. When I saw this mower I decided I would try it when my old one gave up on me. I expected the mower to do better than a traditional lawn tractor, but I was amazed at the speed and agility It had. My property is very hilly with a large pond and that is what attracted me to the four wheel steer. At no time do I feel like the front end is going to drift even while mowing across the slopes. It is a very stable machine. It has also cut my mowing time in half, from 2+ hours to an hour and 15 minutes. What a great mower.
I have not owned this machine long but so far the experience has been a pleasure. I went with cub cadet again due to the trouble free 6 years with my 1046. I upgraded to the rzt s 54 due to my property expanding. I needed to cut my mow time down. The rzt was the perfect fit. The comfort and power of this machine is unmatched in residential zero turns in my opinion. This machine is easier to drive than a car. I would like like to thank cub cadet in there innovative ideas, and craftsmanship they put in there machines.
